"Lost Stories Of Animalia" was inspired by Rosemary Jackson's "Stories of Animalia Academy". These are side-stories meant to replicate and reiterate what happens, and sometimes will be just little blobs of fun stories. Criticism and comments gladly appreciated. Thanks, and enjoy!
The cold itched at the girl. She could always feel the cold, but it had never engulfed her so much. Maybe it was the realization of what her father was about to do. Maybe it was the fear slinking down her every limb. Or perhaps she was becoming more human. A chill vibrated Brenda's spine, and the half-blood resisted pulling her fluffy squirrel tail out to comfort herself.
"Megan! Please, come one!" Brenda's adoptive father pleaded, grasping his wife's hand sturdily. The woman turned, a kind of annoyed look on her pale face.
"This better be quick. I have things to do," she snapped, tossing a green pen to the table where she worked as she stood stiffly. The man, Colten, cast an excited, slightly nervous glance. She gulped away her fear without success. Colten had told her his plan the night before, and regardless of all the half-blood girl's pleading, he refused to accept the danger. Her mother was one of the head HBES lieutenants, and Brenda and Colten half-bloods. The irony was extraordinarily overwhelming. Megan didn't even know what her family really was, as during Brenda's first few years, she had been off during an important extermination run. So she hadn't ever seen her tail.
The car ride jolted Brenda every which way, mostly because she didn't know if she could work up the strength to hold herself straight. Megan kept casting concerned glances over her shoulder, while Colten just smiled, thinking his relationship with his wife was strong enough to keep her from conducting her job.
When the black SUV stopped, the family clambered out, Brenda with her arms wrapped around herself, and her tail, under her long black skirt, curling around her leg to keep her warm and to stay hidden. With Colten in the lead and Megan and Brenda following slowly behind, they went deeper into the woods. The trees dipped over themselves, their fresh musk hiding folding them into nature. The half-blood girl actually relaxed a little, but her nerves were still on edge.
"Okay, are you ready, Megan?" Colten asked suddenly, turning and stopping in the middle of a small clearing covered in grass.
Megan rolled her eyes, smirking. "For what?"
"Just... First, I want to tell you how much I love you. And-"
"And?" Megan had little patience.
"And that Half-bloods aren't that bad. Becau-"
"WHAT!?" Megan's wide blue eyes stretched until Brenda was sure they would burn a hole through her father. She took a step back, cautious, rested against a tree as her father tried to coax his wife down.
Colten cupped Megan's face in his hands, kissed her, stepped back, smiled and shifted. Into a rabbit. He was one of the luckier ones, with no attributes despite being a land animal. And there he was, a brown-speckled white rabbit, his alert ears attentive, face kind.
But Megan didn't think so. She narrowed her eyes. Took a step forward, and crouched beside Colten
He didn't have time to react before he found his neck broken.
Brenda gasped, her hand at her mouth, tears welling around her eyes. Megan stood, wiped her eyes, tears in her own, and approached Brenda, slowly.
"N-no! Mom!? DAD!?" Brenda backed away, brown eyes darted from her parents, her father still twitching, his large eyes rolled back in his eyes, forever stuck in a rabbit's body.
The next thing she knew, Brenda had been pulled into an embrace by her mother, who softly coaxed her into hugging her back. "Sh.. They'll all spawns of the devil. Your father was evil. I saved you." But Brenda didn't believe it. She'll kill me. And all those other half-bloods. How could we be so blind? And the knife in her mother's belt was so close. All she had to do...
Megan gasped. Brenda squished her face up, heartbroken. Megan backed away, reached behind her, and pulled the dagger from her back, her own blood on her hands, blonde hair rolled high.
"Brenda?" And she fell, backwards, a gasp bursting from her lungs. Brenda fell to her knees, took Megan's hand in hers and held it to her chest, meeting her mother's soft blue eyes. "Why?"
"Because, mom. I'm one of them," She said, closing her eyes and kissing Megan on the cheek.
"N-no! Brenda, you're not!"
Brenda shook her head, stood up, and shifted into her squirrel form. Megan released air in a cross between a gasp and a sigh and a sob. The rodent crouched on her mother's stomach, curling up, fur pressed against her mother.
And then there were hands around her. At first they lifted Brenda, above her mother's head, and she looked down into Megan's eyes. But all she saw there was hatred.
Megan squeezed, he breath coming in gasps, and the squirrel struggling to escape.
Brenda was saved only by Megan's passing out.
She scampered away, switched suddenly back into a brown-haired girl, weeping and sobbing and pounding her fist against the soil.
There was no one left to comfort her.
