What was causing her to stay at the academy?
She could easily leave. Maybe she could take a bus back to her old house and forgive her dad. Maybe she could contact her mom and live with her. Maybe she could start college- she was eighteen after all. Maybe she could escape the academy with Ben, her crush. Maybe she could talk to Opal Strole, her ally, and persuade her to leave with her.
Or maybe, she could torture every single half-blood at the academy except for Ben.
It was what was making her stay at the academy after all. It was the only reason she could think of that forced her to stay. Well, besides her crush Ben.
It was chilly and gloomy, just the way Sapphire liked it. She loved chilly and gloomy days. It reminded her of how cold and gloomy her past was, and how grim her future could be.
Past.
The word lingered in her mind, speaking themselves repeatedly- past, past, past, past. The word was horrible, terrible. But there was also a funny side to the word. It humored her, because it could not be changed. No matter how hard Sapphire tried, the word would always be a miserable one for her. It was almost if you had written the word past on a sheet of paper in pen for an essay, but it wasn't the word you wanted, but you couldn't erase it, and you only had one piece of paper, so you couldn't throw it away.
Past.
Sapphire walked through the forest, leaves crunching under her shoes. The cold surrounded her, and she breathed out heavily, to see her breath look as if it was smoke. Maybe she just needed a shoulder to cry on that day. Maybe that was why her past seemed especially heavy. She didn't know for sure.
