Sapphire O'Connor The night was exhilarating and yet calm. Every muscle on Zalman's body tensed with each hesitant step he took, crunching through frost-bitten dirt and running his fingers along trees. His instincts told him to take flight, that really the air would be safer than the ground, but he knew otherwise. The air would make Zal a perfect target, he knew, for any well-aimed knife of Shadow's. His heart beat faster out of anxiety simply by the mention of her name. Besides, even if he did run into Shadow, he could try to talk to her. Maybe all she needed was a way to let down, and torturing was that strategy? It was risky. Anyone at the academy would say he really shouldn't. But somehow he felt an immense responsibility to take care of students at the school. He didn't want anyone to get hurt. And part of Zalman felt fairly certain he just might walk away with only a stab wound or two. So, walking through the forest, wings tucked tightly despite his need to just take off, Zal continued on, his eyes bright and scanning. Night-vision didn't do much as a human. Besides, he would be so focused on finding something there that he wouldn't be focused on what wasn't. If that made any sense. Zal decided to click off his night-vision, since sometimes it gave him a headache. Bad move on his part.

Sapphire was strolling through the forest one night when she heard footsteps. She leaped behind a tree, hoping the person didn't see her. It was night, so it was a very slim chance any normal person could see her in the dark. But there were half-human, half-animal people at this academy. What if they had an animal half that could see in the dark? It would be the end to her nighttime sinister plans.
The person walked closer, giving Sapphire the opportunity to see the person better. The glowing moon's bare light gave her a faint view of the person. It was a male, with grey hair, and it looked like he had wings, but she wasn't sure. Another great victim at her hands- was anyone at the academy going to learn self defense?
She held her katana in her right hand and followed closely behind the boy. Sapphire felt tenser and tenser with each step she took towards her next prey.

Zalman paused. He could have sworn he heard someone behind him, but it could have been the wind. His wings twitching nervously, he itched his arm, looking around. Combing his hair back with his hand, he sighed. I should probably get out of here. This was a bad idea. Turning around, he was faced with a grim event.

| Sorry for the late reply! |
Sapphire intently watched the man turn around. When he was halfway around she swung her katana, aiming for the blade to drag along the side of his left upper arm (assuming he turned to his left when he turned around). No time for chit-chat, She thought, Because I'm going into battle.

The man yelped and instinctively took off into the air, hovering above the trees stupidly, though out of reach. "What!? What do you want with me, Shadow!?" He yelled, glaring across the land below him. His heart almost stopped when he saw not the depicted woman, but another one entirely.

| Sorry for the late reply. Life is a little hectic for me lately | "I'm not Shadow, you stupid bird." Him going up into the air confirmed for Sapphire he was a half-blood, because how else could he fly? And, since he could fly, she guessed he was a bird. "I need to ask you some questions." Knowing she probably wouldn't be able to attack him if he wasn't on the ground, because she had no weapons she could throw at him (she was only carrying her katana), she stay put standing on the forest floor.

Another wave if fear rocked Zal's gut and a chill slunk down his spine. Strong wings keeping him high, he observed the woman, sighed.
"Fine," he called, letting himself get lower, though his muscles were still tense. "Just under one condition: Don't gas me." He alighted on the ground, mildly tucked his wings away, several feet away.

| MWAHAHA LATE REPLY Lol | "I promise, I won't gas you. How would I get gas anyway?" She chuckled, toying with her katana in her right hand. Borrrring. You gonna kill him yet? Or at least injure him? Come on, Sapphire! A lousy slit isn't gonna teach him a lesson for whatever he did, whoever the guy is! She thought as she looked him down as best she could. It was dark so it was hard to see. She could make out gray hair and wings. Gray hair and wings... Gray hair and wings... The words rang in her head like a catchy jingle on an advertisement. But wait- gray hair? Wings? Zalman! He was the first person she met when she came to the academy! A little regret came to her, for her successful attempt at injuring the guy a few minutes ago, but hey, it was what he deserved. He was a half-blood after all, and Sapphire tolerated no half-bloods whatsoever. "Come on. Walk with me, Zalman. Tell me more about yourself." She grinned evilly beneath her mask. Sapphire was excited to see his reaction, because either she a) got his name right or b) got his name wrong, and each of those choices brings a different reaction from a person. To hopefully lull him into a fake sense of security, she slipped her katana back in its sheath.

How does she know my name? he thought, accusingly, watching her with a clear hesitation in his usually warm eyes. Nodding slightly, he decided to trust her in he slightest, walking alongside her but at a few feet of distance. Everyone knows my name, he reasoned. "I know you're probably more for asking the questions," Zal remarked after some time, never losing focus with eyes steadily centered on Marie, "But you said you weren't Shadow, right? Then... Who are you? Or, er, what should I call you?"

Hmm, what should he call her? She had told him her "name", Marie, when she met him. But maybe someone would recognize her real name, Sapphire, if she spoke it. "Don't bother about what to call me." She concluded.
"Who is your sweetheart?" She asked as she kept walking, smiling beneath her mask. "I bet you have one."

|NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! 104 word post and Google said "nope"|
Zalman laughed to mask his unease, ran his hand across his neck awkwardly. "I do. But something about you makes me think you don't!" It was meant to be a joke, something he was known for, but perhaps he was losing his cool around an assassin. Who wouldn't? It was him trying to make the air less tense and just kind of side-step the question. "Right?"

She stopped in her tracks at the joke. It offended her greatly because she didn't have a boyfriend, and it was something she desired greatly. "You are lucky to have a girlfriend." She growled angrily and, in a flash, she had pulled her katana out of its sheath and swung it in the direction of the man.

The blade caught Zalman in the shoulder, and he winced, held it loosely. "I-I'm sorry! It was a joke!" He protested, holding a hand out for self-defense. "And... You're right! I am... I am lucky. She's wonderful!"|OMG, what if Sapphire was like "YOU'RE MINE!" and forced Zal to love her LOL|

| MWAHAHAHAHAHA Actually sounds like something she would do | "Great! She's oh-so-perfect!" She almost yelled as she attempted to tackle his legs and bring him down. She needed to take him to the base and interrogate him soon. Maybe it was just her, but she felt like time was wasting. She felt like minutes were hours, and midnight wouldn't be around forever.

As soon as Sapphire lunged, Zalman stretched his wings open and jumped into the air, hovering above the assassin by a few feet, heart pounding. "You know what? She is! Jess is perfect! And I love her with everything I have!" He snapped, raising his hands to confirm his point. "You can have that too! Just stop this! You don't have to hurt people to heal your own wounds; just let others heal them!"

Her mask felt wet suddenly, and Sapphire realized she was crying. "NO ONE WILL EVER LOVE ME!" She shrieked. It was true in her mind. How could anyone love her? All she wanted was revenge. All she craved was revenge. How could anyone love someone as crazy determined as she was? She knelt down, and heard leaves crunch beneath her, but she didn't care. She had just yelled at midnight, so a couple leaves crunching was nothing.
"Even though it's what I want." A tiny whisper escaped her lips.

Zal, surprised, sighed and landed beside the young woman. He couldn't protect his large heart from the possible dangers of assisting a broken assassin; he just needed to. "Sh..." He muttered, kneeling beside the girl, attempting to lightly rest his hand on her shoulder for comfort. "It's okay! I can love you. I can help you find the man out there for you. Just..." Zal tried to take Marie under the elbows and draw her closer for a hug. "It's alright."

For some unknown reason, she accepted the hug.
Maybe she was just overwhelmed in the situation. Maybe she was just overwhelmed in the academy. She didn't know why, but she hugged him back gratefully.
"How can you find the right man for me?" It was too much for her. She took off her mask. She knew if Zalman saw her face he could recognize her, but she didn't care now. One thing was for sure though, she wasn't going to tell Opal.

It was the overwhelming sense of defeat that tinged the night air that made Zalman resist gasping in shock. Part of him wasn't surprised - she had seemed off from the start - but it was kind of surprising to discover who the new assassin at the academy was, no matter who you were. "Because you're beautiful," Zalman responded, unwavering, just looking at her face with a warm smile. He pointed not touched oh jeez to Marie's heart. "And I'm sure you're more so in here. You've just gotta Ignite.. the light! And Leeeet it SHINE! Sorry." He smiled, cautiously.

She half-grinned, half-smirked at Zalman's singing disease breakout.
"Thank you for the compliment," Sapphire said gratefully. "I haven't had one of those in around eleven years." It was true. The last compliment she could remember was from her mother when she was seven, before her parents divorced, before her mother moved out, before she was abused. If she had gotten a compliment at the academy, she certainly hasn't remembered it.

"Everyone would give you a compliment if you let them see you for you, not this.... Marie that is so stuck on hurting people. Do you really want to be like Shadow? After all she's done? She'll just stab you in the back. I wouldn't do that. No one at the academy would." Zalman tried to determine what might be racing through the girls head. "Please. Trust me."

"I can't trust you... I can't trust anyone here besides Shadow because..." She lingered, wondering if she should tell him the truth. Deep inside she felt she did want the half-bloods to see her as a different person, but she questioned that deep inside. Why? She was strictly determined to torture the half-bloods, so why did she want them to see her as different? Maybe because she wanted to fit in. Maybe because she wanted to experience real love. She remained unsure of her deep inside, but she knew with her mind and heart that she really wanted love. Being abused by someone she loved, her father, had left an empty gap inside her, but a full thirst for revenge. Being left with her father by someone she loved, her mother, had left an empty gap inside of her, but a full thirst for love.
... because I'm different than everyone here."

|That post gave me the chills =)|
"We all are," Zalman reasoned, giving her a pitying look. "That's what makes us human. We're all unique." He drew a breath, smiled. "We can be friends, you know. I can help you, find a boyfriend, 'fit in', or what ever that means. You just have to let me in."

"That's the thing... I am human." She revealed. She was scared to- what if Opal was listening right then? Opal would never let Sapphire work with her. (Oh goodness here comes a long paragraph of talking)
"I had a happy life, until I was seven years old. My parents divorced and my mom moved out, and for some reason my dad was given custody of me. The next ten years of my life were what leaves me with scars today. My dad locked me in my room, he hit me, he would make me go without food for days. I couldn't go to school, I couldn't play with my friends anymore, my life was shattered. I escaped at seventeen, wandered around, got some weapon training here and there. Then I found a bus ticket on the ground and came here." Sapphire explained to Zalman, tears streaming down her cheeks as she closed her eyes and tried to forget her past.
But she couldn't.
Those scars were forever.

Zalman didn't say anything. It must have been touch to feel the pain of the harassment dealt by family member. It tore the boy in two at the prospect of it. After a while, he said, "You're not the only human here. There's a few, some no one even knows about. I'm sure even... Well, I'm sure, knowing what I know of Shadow, she's run into a few male humans. And it doesn't have to be a human! There's plenty of open male half-bloods. Just let me help you," Zal pleaded, his eyes full of honesty and concern. "Please."
|Sapphire might be all like, "YOU CAN HELP ME BY BEING UNCONSCIOUS SO I CAN GET YOU TO THE STORAGE ROOM"|

| Lol! Is it okay if I say that in her thoughts? | You can help me by being unconscious so I can get you to the storage room! She thought, but part of her trusted him. She wanted love, and it seemed he was the only person willing to help her get it. She searched his eyes (lol not literally) and they appeared pleading- like five-year-old girls wanting to go into a Barbie store. Why did she trust him? She hadn't the slightest idea! But she knew it might be for the better of her life. "Okay," Sapphire smiled slightly, as if everything was a humorous joke at the time, but she just didn't want to admit it. "Why don't we meet up again sometime soon, preferably not at night like this, and you can help me pick out different clothes and change my personality and stuff?"This was it. She was ready to take the plunge into a different personality. Jump from the diving board of her old self. Fall off the cliff of her past, and die a new person. Was she ready for it? Sapphire doubted herself the moment she spoke. But she knew it might be for the better of her life.

A quick smile finalized what Marie was asking. "Okay. By the lake at noon, on Wednesday?" He asked, standing up and offering a hand to help the broken girl up. What am I doing? This could be a trap, Zal thought, but he let himself fall into ignorance of what Marie was capable of. "And trust me. Take the mask off. Meet some students." He smiled, stretched his wings out in preparation to leave.
|Just a question: Sapphire's not really turning good, right? Like maybe she'll dip her toes in and say "EW" right?|
