There were grunts and groans coming from a blonde-haired girl that was shooting hoops. There was gossip about the academy not being completely safe. The students were uneasy, and you rarely saw any of them outside of the dorms and the school. What the heck is going on!? the platinum blonde thought to herself in anger. Her aiming got worse and worse out of frustration. "Ah!" she yelled and threw the basketball at the hoop with full force. Lauren walked up to the fence and kicked it with her foot. It was like she really needed that dumped on her when the school was said to keep them safe. Of course, she couldn't believe she was stupid enough to believe that.
They were never safe. Humans were just going to keep on hunting them down one by one. What were they even doing with the younger halfbloods they caught? Keeping them as slaves until they turned 18 and then kill them off. It wasn't fair! None of it was fair, but life wasn't fair so... A few tears managed to escape from her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. Lauren panted slightly and her cat ears twitched when she heard someone coming. She wiped away her tears before she turned around to face the stranger.

Grant was walking around the courtyard, whistling away, carefree. Rumors have been floating around that people have been kidnapped and held hostage against their will. But, from what he heard, all of the people that were taken hostage were in the forest. Grant almost never went in the forest, mostly because the courtyard was all he needed. It was sunny, had trees for shade, and it made him feel safe.
Grant saw a girl with platinum blonde hair and saw that she was frustrated. He thought he could help her with her stress, and entered the fence. "Uh, hi there! It looks like you're frustrated, wanna talk it through?" Asked Grant as he came closer to the girl.

Her deep pink eyes narrowed when the boy that had approached her started talking to her like some guidance counselor. Zalman had already taught her enough with his wise words. He actually helped her understand that getting close to people wasn't such a bad thing. Ugh, he smelled like a human with a faint scent of an animal. What animal was he? Lauren forced a fake smile on her face and waved at the brown-haired boy. "Nah, I'm fine. Life is just... complicated." She walked up to him and outstretched her hand to shake hands with him. "I'm Lauren. Ragdoll cat at your service. What about you? What is your name?"

"Huh. My name's Grant, I'm half wolf. " said Grant, trying to sound friendly to the girl. "It's okay if you don't wanna talk, but what's bothering you? You seem...edgy."

That was the animal scent! Lauren knew it was a scent she didn't enjoy that much. A wolf, also known as the dog's ancestor. Dogs were annoying. They made too much noise with their barking and some of them howling. Oh, well.. Hopefully, this one wasn't too loud. "Nice to meet you, Grant Bixby." She pulled her hand away when Grant didn't bother to take it and give it a good shake. It's not like she liked shaking hands either but she did it to be polite. Lauren laughed nervously, knowing she was guilty of that. She took a glance over her shoulder real quick to see basketballs scattered everywhere. Her bangs fell into her eyes, and she looked back at the wolf boy. The neko blew her bangs and let out a sigh. "Have you heard anything so far? You know, about the rumors going around? I hear there have been a few kidnappings. Does this usually happen or is it new? I haven't been here for long. Maybe about three days."

"Rumors, yeah I've heard them. Well, I'm new here too, but when I came here, someone said we were still in a dark age. I wonder what she meant by that..." Said Grant, trying to explain to Lauren. "All I'm hoping for is to not get caught by this assassin."
Grant was way too paranoid to go into the forest, where all the kidnaps had taken place. If he had been kidnapped, he would lose his mind and faint.

They were rumors. Just rumors, but there had been kidnappings. The rumors must have been true. Well, at least she only one person to worry about. That was Zalman. He was her only friend and yet she secretly worried about the other students. Grant said that he didn't want to get caught by the assassin. "Wait, there's an assassin?" Lauren knew about kidnappings, but she didn't know it was by an assassin. What was going on? That question kept on coming back to her mind. "I don't think anyone wants to be caught by an assassin." Getting caught by an assassin most likely meant death. They were assassins! They were pretty much born to kill for any reason they could find. The neko walked over and picked up the basketball that was nearest to them. She turned around to face the boy once again, bouncing the basketball on the ground. "Do you want to shoot some hoops?" "Well, that's what I heard. I don't know who the assassin is, but I sure don't want to!" said Grant. When Lauren offered him to shoot some hoops. "Well, I could, but I'm not all that good. I'll try, though." Said Grant, taking the basketball.
He faced the basketball hoop and threw the ball. It missed of course. The ball hit the brim of the hoop and bounced off.

Lauren giggled and nodded her head in agreement. Grant was right about that. She didn't want to find out who the assassin was either. Nobody should unless they are crazy like an assassin. At first, Grant sounded like he was going to refuse shooting hoops. It was okay if he didn't want to, but she thought they might as well while they were there. Or, they could move over to one of the tables and talk.
Despite sounding like he wasn't going to at least try shooting hoops, he decided to give it a shot. Lauren smiled a small smile and handed the basketball over to him. She took a few steps back and let Grant start throwing the basketball. He threw it alright and it bounced off the brim of the hoop. "That's okay. You almost got it in there." she said, trying to encourage him to try again. She grabbed another basketball nearby and walked over to Grant, handing it to him.
"Try again. Take your time and if you aim for that square on the hoop, it should go in. That's one of the tricks I was taught."

Grant smiled at Lauren's encouragement. "Thanks, lemme try agin." Said Grant, taking the other ball. He changed his stance to stand in front of the basketball hoop pole. He focused on how far the hoop was away from him, and how much strength he'd need. Grant threw the ball, and the ball circled inside the hoop a few times, but it made through. "Huh, that was a good throw." Said Grant.

Lauren stood next to Grant and watched him try again. If he didn't get it that time, she would give him a few pointers on how to make his aiming accurate. Says the girl who kept on missing, but she had such poor aim because she was frustrated. Throwing the balls out of anger wasn't going to make it go in the hoop. Lauren smiled when Grant got the ball through the hoop. "Yes, it was." Before Lauren could get cocky, she went after another ball and placed herself in front of the hoop. She also indicated the force she would need, how far away the hoop was, and how high she would have to go for this shot. The girl went into her shooting position and did a little jump, throwing the ball with both hands. The ball flew high and went straight into the hoop. "Let's see if you can top that, wolf boy." she said and turned around, grinning. Grant Bixby

Grant smiled and blushed as Lauren agreed that he did make a good throw. But obviously he had to do better after Lauren completely beat him. "Well, there's no way you really can beat it..." said Grant, taking the basketball anyways. "But I'll see what I can do." Grant went farther back, almost to the other basketball hoop, and started dribbling the ball. Tmp, tmp, tmp. Grant started to run with the ball, but kept on dribbling, until he was right in front of the hoop. When he reached the hoop he jumped, and threw the ball. It landed straight into the hoop, which made Grant smile.

Lauren didn't think there was a way to beat her shot unless you were talking distance wise. Or, if you did a slam dunk. That would be cool to see. Grant used distance, and he was almost to the other goal. What was he doing? The neko remained quiet and decided to observe the boy. Maybe she could learn something from his techniques. It was just a friendly little game, of course. Lauren's smile grew bigger because she liked the fire in Grant. He wasn't a sore loser nor was he a quitter. Her bright eyes grew wide as she watched Grant dribble the ball and jump, making a perfect shot. She clapped her hands and walked over to Grant, smiling at him. "That was a beautiful shot, Grant." she praised him.
Boy, the guys at this school were making it hard on her to not like them. She always had more respect for women than men. The boys at her school were annoying, childish, and naive. They were selfish and they always bothered the girls. "I think I'm going to take a break." Lauren looked around nervously and blushed hard. "Would you... um... like to join me? Y-You know, just to talk. I don't have many friends, and I always talk to myself. It would be nice if I could talk to someone that had their own opinion about things."

Grant blushed once more, and smiled. "Thanks for the compliment, Lauren." said Grant. He wiped his forehead with his arm, and took a deep breath. It was sunny, which made him even more hot. He turned towards Lauren and blushed (how can he blush harder). "I'll join you." he said as he smiled brightly.

It was no problem at all. It was a great shot so he deserved the compliment. (Oh, I didn't know it was sunny.) The sun beat down on the two of them, and Lauren felt tempted to walk over to the bench underneath a shady tree. But, she waited for Grant to accept her invite or to decline it. It didn't matter either way to her. Her smile grew bigger and she nodded, gesturing Grant to follow her over to the bench. I bet once we sit underneath the tree and talk for a while, it will start to get cold. Lauren had already started walking towards the bench. She walked up to the bench and sat down, looking back at Grant to see if he was coming.

(lol i just made it up so i have an excuse for him to wipe his forehead and look cute)
Grant walked over to Lauren and sat down on the bench. The shady tree relieved Grant, and cooled him down. To spark up a conversation, Grant asked, "I know this is a weird question but would you want to be twice as happy, or twice as smart?" He had read many books on starting conversations and how to fit in, mostly for his bullied times in High School. And Middle School. And Elementary School. And Pre-school.

(Haha nice!)
Lauren smiled at Grant as he sat down on the bench with her. The cat girl could recall her weird meeting with Zalman. It was weird, of course, but they became friends later on. It was funny how that worked out. The shade provided by the tree felt nice. It wasn't too cold and it wasn't too hot. It was almost in the right temperature. Lauren blinked at Grant curiously, wondering how she should answer that question. Would I want to be twice as happy or twice as smart..? She wasn't exactly sure about her answer. The first thing that popped into her head was to be twice as happy. "Um... I guess it depends on how you ask that. I would think... I would want to be twice as happy." It wasn't a trick question was it? It didn't matter anyway. Everyone had their own opinion on different things. "Both sides have some pretty good advantages, don't you think?"

"Now that I think about it, they are. Well, I would pick happy as well, mostly because I wouldn't care if I was naïve, I would still be happy, though, right?" said Grant. A happy him would have love and be surrounded by cute fluffy animals. Yeah, he's girly.

Being twice as smart or twice as happy was a little hard to choose from. If you were happy, it shouldn't matter. But, being smart could also get you a job and you would be able to solve some problems quick. All that mattered to Lauren at the moment was happiness. She desperately wanted to make some more friends, even though she didn't act like it sometimes. Zalman kind of understood where she was coming from. She was also scared that if she made friends, they would be taken away from her by the humans or something else. The humans had taken her father and her caretaker. It sucked that she had to get so close to her father, who rejected her when she was little, and then he was killed by humans. He was her best friend and her father.
Sometimes she wished she had never gotten so close to him because it hurt her so much when he was killed. "Happiness could also effect yourself from moving on in life. If you don't have at least some of it, you would be an emotionless being. But... I guess that's kind of like me. I had lost my way in life since my father died. Some people would say I'm heartless just because I can't feel the way they do about people that are dear to them. It isn't my fault..." Lauren glanced at Grant and sighed, "Sorry. Anyway, do you have any siblings? What are they like? I was born an only child. I was always curious about having a sibling. It would be nice because if you want to talk about something that you can't talk about to your parents, you could have your sibling to talk to about it."

Grant listened to Lauren's theory, while nodding to some parts, and sometimes even muttering "Uh-huh." But then he heard her background. Grant started to feel really sorry for her, and he knew he couldn't really relate to her, since he was never all that close to his own parents, but he was close to his own brother, but he was here at the academy. Grant had never lost a loved one. Well, maybe he had lost himself. "It's okay, Lauren. I wouldn't have known what it feels like, but when I was in the human world, I felt like I was never myself anymore, and it felt terrible." said Grant. He shook it off and decided to answer Lauren's other question. "Oh, well, I was born an only child too, but then my parents found a stray dog, and they took it in to keep it safe. When I was 7, it transformed into a human. It was a half blood all along. I became closer to him as I grew up. Well, Elias, my brother, is pretty friendly, but he's never afraid to pick a fight, and he's stubborn." answered Grant.

Lauren didn't mean to sound like a sob story. She certainly did not want to be pitied nor did she want Grant to think her background could better his. That would just be stupid. No, she was not that kind of person. She knew that most of the half-bloods at Animalia had suffered losing their families to the humans like her. What she didn't like was the kind of people that told their tragic back story as if they are proud that they had gone through so much. Or, they just wanted attention and wanted to be pitied. "I shouldn't have told you that in the first place. I'm sorry..."
Lauren looked to the side, thinking about what she had just told him. Why do I keep doing that? I don't want to be pitied by people. I guess it's because I never had anyone to talk to about it, really. Talking to myself wouldn't really give me the help I need. She only changed the subject so it wouldn't be a depressed feeling lingering around them. People would get disturbed by hearing things like that. She didn't want to make Grant feel uncomfortable if he didn't know what to say. Lauren giggled to herself when Grant described her brother as stubborn. "Sounds like quite the handful, huh? But, I bet he's worth putting up with, isn't he?"

(I bet she's laughing because she's actually the same person)
Grant giggled along with Lauren. "Yep! He sure is..." he said, trying not to go too deep into his past. Elias did go rouge for awhile, and he didn't want to go into that. "So, what was it like where you grew up?" Asked Grant, trying to get out of the previous conversation.

(Haha. Ikr? He can be, though xD)
That sounded nice. Lauren wished she had a sibling. Then, she'd probably regret wishing for it later. "It was a nice and small town by the beach. My house wasn't far from the beach either. It felt good to open my window and see the ocean from far away. It had a breathtaking view. And, I'd rather not bore you with my childhood. I certainly don't want to be pitied. I'm sure there are other people that have had it worse. It doesn't matter, really. I don't want to be talked to like I'm a baby." There were so many times Lauren had gotten that from people. Pity. It made her feel weak.
They shouldn't have felt sorry for her when she was getting through it just fine. No matter how hard she tried to direct the subject to a happy one, it kept on coming back to her past. It sucked that she was stuck like that sometimes. "I never really liked boys, but I see that the boys here are making it hard for me not to like them." she said and smiled at Grant, hinting that he was one of those boys. "The boys in my neighborhood were selfish, annoying, and childish. They always bothered the girls, and I couldn't stand seeing that so I would stand up for the girls."

(Lol, Grant sorta fits the definition of childish)
Grant smiled when Lauren said she grew up by a beach. That must've been awesome, waking up to a fresh breeze, a beautiful view, it had to have been amazing. But then he started to frown when she explained that her childhood was ruined by boys. Grant smiled, though when she hinted that she liked him. "Well, boys at that age tend to be like that. Little boys are jerks, they become even more so when they're a tween." explained Grant, as though he knew it for fact, which he did.

Lauren had an obsession with catching nature at its most beauty. It was a good thing she was born near the beach then. She listened to Grant explain to her why the boys in her neighborhood were like that. Yeah, he was right. They were little obnoxious boys and even more so as tweens like Grant said. "Did you happen to be one of those little jerks?" she asked and leaned in to see if there was any hesitation. "Hm?" It was okay if he was one and at least he wasn't like that now. That was a blessing for Grant. Lauren would be snapping at him and probably driving his face into the ground if he was one of those jerks. "I guess it doesn't matter, anyway. You are who you are now so that's all that matters." Grant Bixby

"Well actually, I was bullied by those jerks." said Grant. All his life he'd been bullied by everyone, even girls. The only place he had ever felt safe was home and here at the academy, well not so much now since there's been kidnappings, and a masked assassin on the loose.

Her bright gaze became gentle when he said that. I wonder why they would bully him. Maybe he was different now than he was then. It still didn't make much sense. Grant was friendly, good-looking, and he wasn't a quitter. As far as she knew, he wasn't a quitter. "Hm... That's interesting. You didn't look like the kind to hang out with them, anyway." That was a good thing. Who would want to hang out with the jerks? Probably another jerk. And, she knew that Grant wasn't a jerk. Lauren let out a sigh and sat back on the bench, looking up at the sky. "The sky is so blue today... I wonder why that is. It's been so cold and gloomy lately. Maybe it's the changing of the seasons."

(Apparently he's good looking. I have succeeded!)
Grant smiled. Well, he didn't look like a jerk, that's good. I guess being jerky looking was bad.
He looked up at the sky and nodded. It had been weird that it had been sunny today, but not any other day. "Maybe today was supposed to have good intentions, because all the other days have been dark...with all the kidnapping and such." said Grant.

"Haha~ You must be right." It was funny how the weather could change on the mood. It had been dark and gloomy since Shadow had started kidnapping people. Surely, that wasn't the reason. The weather just had perfect timing. "Yes, I suppose the weather does help a little bit with the mood." Lauren continued to gaze up at the blue sky, watching the white fluffy clouds floating by. If only there could be a blue sky like that every day. That would make her day. The shade felt nice and comfortable. Lauren felt like she could just sit back and fall asleep on the bench. "This is nice... It actually feels like the kidnappings have stopped.. for now. But, it's quiet... A little too quiet for my liking. I guess we shouldn't let our guard down just yet."

Grant smiled as he looked up at the clouds, (god he smiles a lot) and realized along with Lauren that the weather could easily change the mood. Sunny days always had a nicer connotation to it, rather than cloudy or rainy day. "That would be really satisfying, no kidnapping. But we should still stay as cautious as before." said Grant, agreeing with Lauren.
