@iamawesomeno
It was midnight. Damian couldn't sleep. And it wasn't the usual owl urge to not sleep during the night, but it was that something was bothering him. He glided through the air silently, not making a sound, since it was an owl's specialty. The air brushed the tips of his feathers, rustling them slightly as he soared through the forest. It was nice to be able to be using his wings again, whether in owl form or human form. Alert blue eyes scanned the trees for a high branch where the half-blood could sit. He spotted one high up that would still be strong enough to hold his human form, while still concealing him from anyone who might be below.
Adjusting his course, the snow owl outstretched his claws and landed on the branch, then shifted to his human form. A dark blue scarf hung around his neck, whipping around in the wind a bit as he crouched on the branch. He was wearing a long-ish black coat and black fingerless gloves to help protect himself from the cold, since it was snowing outside. Being a snowy owl, he didn't need that much protection, however.
The half-blood shifted so that his back was against the trunk of the tree, moving his wings out of the way so that they were protecting him from a bit of the cold, while simultaneously keeping him even more hidden. His breath came out in little clouds as he leaned against the bark and sighed a bit. Soon he heard twigs being crunched below. The teen moved so that he could observe the newcomer from above, not daring to make a sound, though he knew that the forest grounds of the Academy were safe.
He wasn't expecting who had decided to come.

"Oh, hey. Damian, right? I'm Opheila. I couldn't sleep, so I decided to come out here." Explained Opheilia. She started to climb up the tree, and sat near Damian.
She was wearing a royal blue scarf, bright blue mittens, and a thick winter jacket. It wasn't snowing too hard, the snow was falling down gracefully.
"So, why did you come out here?" Asked Opheilia.

Damian scooted away from the girl, trying to keep as far as he could without causing the branch to break. His wings closed, a show of his uneasiness around the girl. He purposely looked straight forward, a small scowl planted on his face. It was rare when his more owl-like nature kicked in while at the Academy, but if it did, you could tell something was up.
There was always something weird going on about Ophelia. She didn't seem to have any animal characteristics, which happened, but even then the person would share some personality traits that you could associate with their animal half. But Ophelia...was normal. She claimed she was half-kiwi, but even for a flightless bird, her bones would be lighter and she wouldn't put so much weight on them. Damian could tell she was lying about it, but never actually confronted the girl about it.
"I'm an owl, remember? I'm nocturnal," he replied, still not looking at her.

"Oh, yeah, I forgot. Sorry." apologized Opheilia. "Am I bothering you?"
Damian was scooting away from her, and not making eye contact with her. Perhaps he's looking at something and concentrating on it? thought Opheilia. She then looked forward, in the same direction as him, and saw nothing but snow and trees.

Damian ended up giving a slightly annoyed sounding "No," before he heard the branch under them creak. "This branch isn't strong enough for the both of us," the half-blood observed, standing up on it and spreading his wings, being careful to not touch Ophelia. He took a deep breath before jumping off the branch and trying to glide down to a lower branch.
Tried to. His balance was off from not being used to using his wings in human form and he ended up crashing into the branch with a loud umph. He hung there by his arms for a minute, slightly dazed, but still trying to get on top of the thicker branch.
"That wasn't supposed to happen..." he muttered.

"Oh my god! Are you ok?" asked Opheilia as she looked down at Damian. She was always cautious of people, and she always freaked out over it.

"What does it look like?" Damian asked as he hauled himself onto the branch, shaking the dirt off his shoulders. He heard another creak from above, and saw a crack starting to form in the branch the Ophelia was standing in. "Ophelia! Get off that branch now!" he shouted moments before it snapped.
(I built the tension ;3 let's see if Ophelia can jump in time or Dami has to save her.)

"Oh god! AHH!" screamed Opheilia as the branch snapped and fell. Opheilia couldn't do anything before it snapped. Only a miracle could save her now.

Or an owl half-blood. Damian tried to reach out to her but soon realized that wouldn't work. A new look of determine passed over his face as his wings snapped open and flew out to their full length in less than a second. He leaped off the branch, closing his wings again slightly go down faster and grabbed Ophelia by both her arms. His wings spread out again, catching the air and bringing them to a slower pace. The weight from the other teen was causing Damian to sink more, so he settled on gliding down to the floor.
There was something up about Ophelia that Damian didn't like, yeah, but he wasn't going to let her get hurt because of that. He dropped her as her feet were inches off the ground and came to a sudden stop himself a few yards away.
"You are definitely not half kiwi," he said, cracking a small smile.

Opheilia let out a nervous laugh. She pulled herself up on the branch. "Thanks, Damian." thanked Opheilia. "Can...I tell you something?"

Damian shrugged a bit, as if it wasn't a big deal that he had just saved her life. To him it wasn't. It was just the right thing to do.
But now that he had confirmed she was not any type of bird, it left the question of what she really was. She had no animal characteristics that Damian could see, and that was weird. She had never transformed either before, and tried to avoid the topic. It was like she was...
...human. The truth smacked him like a rock, or rather, a hand, since he face-palmed himself. "You aren't..." he dragged his hand down and looked at Ophelia with wide eyes. "You can't be a..."

Opheilia cringed a tiny bit before saying, "OK, you caught me. I'm human. Pure Homo Sapiens. I got the acceptance letter to Animalia Academy, and it sounded amazing. I guess I didn't read the fine print that said humans would be killed if they're found here. I love it here, but I don't wanna die!" By now, her eyes were getting all teary.

Damian backed up against the tree, pressing into it and wishing he could somehow pass through it. Bark was pushing onto his wings and back painfully, but he didn't care. He didn't want to believe that Ophelia was a human. He didn't. Just the thought have having gotten so close to her brought painful memories. He closed his eyes in concentration, trying to shut out the images.
Fire. Death. Loss. Fear. He sank down again, bringing his knees up to his chest and burying his face in his hands, still trying to hide the scared little boy inside. The fear in Ophelia's voice reflected the same scared shout that Damian had used to call out for his parents that night.
"S-stay away," he murmured quietly, speaking to nobody in particular. His voice was barely audible, muffled by his jeans and scarf.
Looking up again, he stood up and jumped off the branch, landing on the ground with a thud. "Stay away from me!" he shouted, louder this time. He never blamed Ophelia for what happened to his parents, or any other humans, really. But the hurt from that made him almost unable to trust any human. Even so, he couldn't bring himself to expose her for what she really was. He wouldn't do that to her family. Nobody else deserved that.

"I know it might be surprising, but there's no reason to be scared! I won't hurt you, I promise!" said Opheilia.

"I believe you," Damian started. "I really do. But after all that's happened, it's hard to get over what your kind has done." The half-blood sighed again. He never spoke about where he came from. He hadn't had any reason to, nobody had asked, and Damian had decided it would be better that he didn't ever mention.
"Humans see us as a threat. As monsters who want to destroy them, or something, I honestly don't know," the teen started, running his hand through his dark hair. "But then the killing starts. You want to know how many of us had our lives ruined because of your kind? Do you really?"
"We've all had to hide who we are for fear of being targeted and killed. The ones who are lucky can make it through. The ones that don't have wings, that is. Ears and tails are easy to hide. Animalia Academy was the one place we all thought we could be safe. Do you have any idea how important that was to us?"

"Everything, I know. But I don't see you guys as a threat, and nobody at this school should be afraid of me! I am different than most people, I'm weird. Kids ignored me and I never had friends. I try to stay perky, but on the inside...I'm alone. But, here, I finnally made some friends! This was literally the best thing that has ever happened to me! I don't want to leave, but I dont want to die." explained Opheilia. Opheilia jumped off the branch and sat on a nearby rock. "I'm just...alone."

Damian looked away, stuffing his hands in his pockets as the aura around him darkened to that of when he was on the run. (expression, don't take that too literately >.<) He knew how it felt to be alone. But the people who had caused him to feel alone were humans. His illusion of safety had been shattered in one moment, and he didn't know if he would be able to get it back again.
"I know how that feels," he said quietly. "I'm not going to turn you in. I wasn't ever going to. You have a family that loves you and I would never hurt them by exposing you." Because I know all too well how that feels.
