| Let's say this is before the concert | Was she ready for this? She questioned herself as she sunk her feet into the deep sand. Her brown hair was curled and she was wearing a yellow, spring-feeling dress. It was about as girly as she wanted to dress. Oh, and she was also wearing pale pink lipstick. And mascara. Yikes- she was maybe a little too girly for the simple occasion. She was supposed to meet Zalman Artar by the lake at noon on Wednesday. She wasn't exactly ready to be a Barbie doll, but if it was what she had to do to be in love, she was almost all for it. Sapphire heard what she thought were footsteps. "Are you sure about this?" She assumed it was Zalman, if it was footsteps at all. Because really, who else would meet at the lake on Wednesday at exactly twelve o'clock in the afternoon without any plans to meet anyone?

Zal wasn't as fancy. Just a simple jeans and a checkerboard black and red shirt and white sandals. "What do you mean?" Zal asked in response, coming up beside the assassin. She's beautiful, he thought, looking her up and down. Zalman already had a girlfriend. He didn't think of their meeting as any kind of romantic one, which made him surprised to find the girl that had held a katana to him dressed fancy. Zal's shoulder still stung from the cut across it that she had delivered, but he ignored it and flexed his large black wings in the sun. "You wont hurt me. I'm the only man you have right now, and you know that," he teased, smiling to show he was joking. "I trust you."

She stared at him, a tiny bit of glare in her stare (lol rhyme), daring him to make another joke. Sapphire didn't really find it funny. She had met Ben and Jake, right? They were men too, right? Well, maybe only Ben- Jake was a little, um, dorky in her opinion. But whatever.
"No, I won't hurt you. But you're kinda stupid to trust me." She half-grinned.

Zalman laughed, looking at his feet and smiling. "I suppose so," He admitted, toying with the sand with his toe. Taking a deep breath, then exhaling, he looked up. Then he realized something. I'm talking to the woman that could hurt Jess... And so Zal frowned. "I have one condition with our agreement..."

His frown gave her a few hints, and her hints seemed to be confirmed when he announced his condition. "You don't want me to hurt your siblings? Your girlfriend? Your friends? Fine, I won't. As long as you can help me notice someone."

"But... You know that means that... You shouldn't hurt yourself." He didn't leave the chance to explain. Instead, he just smiled again and got to the point. "It's not a matter of noticing people. It's making them notice you as a person. Try.. Okay, talk to me as though you just met me, and I'm just hanging out on he beach. Okay? Read... Go." Putting on the theatrical thinking face, he crossed his arms and stared out into the lake.

"Why would I hurt myself?" Sapphire snorted. She liked herself- half girly, half murderer. It was almost like a very, very long dream of hers- it was perfect.
I'm bad at acting! No, I'm not. Yes, I am! No, I'm not! A very big debate suddenly occurred in her mind. What if she couldn't pull it off? She didn't want too much critique; that would make her break down for sure. I can do this... I can do this... "Hey!" She smiled at Zalman and tried to tilt her head a little to look at him. "Whatcha doing out here?"

Zal shrugged to compensate for her question. "Just relaxing. It's warm out. Don't you think?" He asked in response, stretching his hands over his head like he had been there for a while. In the back of his head, he was processing how to explain what he had meant by Sapphire's not hurting herself. Don't be pained by what you want to be and what you are being forced to be.

"It's nice to relax sometimes. And yeah, it's pretty warm out!" She grinned and kept looking at him. "I'm Sapphire. And I'm a... Clownfish shift. I know, I know, it's embarrassing. What's your name?" It was hard picturing Zalman as a guy she had never met before, especially since she kinda trusted him. He was going to make her a different person, and she was doubting it, but she knew Zalman couldn't mess things up too bad anyways.

Zalman smiled. She should be wary of lying, though. "Nice to make you're acquaintance, Sapphire. I'm... Derek." Zal bounced on the balls of his feet for a few seconds, then changing his expression to show he was going to explain some things. "You're doing well... Just..." He stepped closer, revealed empty hands to show he had no weapons, then attempted to lift her chin a little. "There... More beautiful than I could have expected." He smiled, just kind of stood there, then took a slow step back.

Is he flirting with me?
Before her brain recognized the words, she said them. "Woah, are you flirting with me?" She swatted his hand away from her chin and stepped back a few steps. Didn't he have a girlfriend already? And even if he was interested in her, she definitely didn't like him.

Throwing his hands up, Zalman scoffed, insulted. "Of course not. You asked for my assistance, and I'm helping. Is that not enough? Am I supposed to throw pixie dust all over you and call it good? NO." Zalman wasn't really sure why he was upset. Maybe it was the realization that the beautiful girl before him had hurt people, hurt him, and he didn't know the first thing about her besides that. He had no idea what her true intentions were, and no idea if he was just a tool or an actual.. friend... or... slave? Either way, it sounded wrong, venom on his tongue. What do you call a woman you wish to be kind to but are afraid of? What do you call yourself? "Do you want my help?"

"Yes, I want your help! Why else would I be here? She said angrily. Why was he so cranky all of a sudden? Maybe he didn't like her and felt wrongly accused. She could understand that. But still!
"I guess then you're not willing to help me." Sapphire turned away from Zalman, a little disappointed in him. He was supposed to help her act girlier and kinder, not blow up at her! Now how would she get Ben to like her?

Zalman's face felt hot. I can turn this around. She might go back on her word... She might try to find... "Jess.." He said his love's name under his breath, as Sapphire walked away, leaving a break of several moments of silence and consideration. Sighing, he bolted forward and reached to take the assassin-with-a-dream's arm and turn her back towards him. "Stubbornness and refusal to work things out isn't going to help," he warned, trying to make it seem like he had planned the entire thing. "Be willing to talk to your true love and figure out what his problem is. No blades involved."

"I wasn't stubborn or refusing!" She yelled, now facing him since he grabbed her arm. "You... You flirted with me! 'There, more beautiful than I could have expected'?" Her glare returned, studying Zalman. What was he thinking? Was he embarrassed? Was he angry as she was? Sapphire felt humiliated and pathetic in the moment. She also felt angry and upset.

"It was a test, to see how willing you were to make friends," He pressed the lie, every word making him fearful and yet hopeful. "If anyone else had said that, they would have been the first to leave. Not you." It made sense. Zalman was a sincere man, and he had originally only been intending to make her appear more appealing for anyone looking for her love.

She lifted an eyebrow, confused. Was he saying he tested her? Was he saying she was special in a sort?
Sapphire didn't care anymore. All she wanted was Ben's attention and a new personality, not arguing and stupid may-or-may-not-be-flirting. "I don't get it, but whatever. Can we move on to whatever's next?" She sighed, a little exasperated.

Zal smiled. "Honesty," he said simply, starting back towards the water abstently, slowly, hoping Sapphire would follow. "Honesty, honesty, honesty. A relation is not true if it's based on lies, as a stone skyscraper can't be built on sticks." He shrugged a little, then stopped. "Sometimes the hardest things to say are the easiest things to determine."

She stared at him blankly. Where did honesty come in? All she had asked was to move on to whatever was planned to be next in their agenda. So why was he talking about honesty?
Sometimes the hardest things to say are the easiest things to determine. Zal's words were stuck in her mind. They repeated themselves, as if they had a special meaning they were hiding from the assassin. Was he saying he couldn't explain something, but she had to determine what it meant? That was the message she thought the somewhat simple statement gave to her. It bombarded her thoughts and gave her all new ones that were filled with great curiosity.

Zalman leaned over, trying to catch Sapphires eyes. He laughed a little, because he thought he saw confusion in her eyes. The half-blood snapped his fingers in front of the girl's eyes, smiling. "Earth to assassin? HellOOOooo?" Wondering if Sapphire really understood what he had meant, he tried to elaborate. "It's hard to explain. How can you trust them if you can't trust yourself? How can they trust you if you tell them nothing?" Zal shrugged. "I don't know. Do you get it?"

"Whatever. No, I don't really get it." She frowned a little bit, still trying to mentally sort his words. If anyone was the most confusing, it would be Zalman. Or Opal. Opal had her manipulating way with words, it was hard to explain.
"What's next?"

Zal sighed, rolled his eyes, and sat on one of the few driftwood logs on the beach. "Just... be honest and people will like you more. That clear enough?" he asked, running his fingers through his gray hair.

She rolled her eyes in response. "Well, now it's clear!" Sapphire grinned. "Now, what else should we do today? Perhaps makeup tutorials and outfit shopping? I don't know what kind of things the academy provides."
